The arrival of Samuel Givens to America was very similar in both date and place to that of Robert Allan -- (From The Samuel Givens Family and Kin by Jane Tyler Craig Reichlein.):

``The Giveans family, including nine children, came to America from Antrim, Ireland, in 1735 along with the John Lewis Family and other Protestants from Northern Ireland, first to Pennsylvania. Then they made their way on foot to what became Augusta Co., VA, prior to 1738...''

(In fact these details are so similar to what we know of Robert Allen's emigration, one suspects it was the same party.)

I have borrowed from too many GIVENS genealogists to mention them all, but special mention should be offered to Phyllis Ewer, Amy Estes, Charles Goodwin, regivens@mediaone.net, Richard Switzer.

I use a common numbering for both this Givens Descendancy Chart and the Allen chart. In addition to the descendants of Samuel Givens of Antrim and Virginia, I also show some descendants of Samuel Alexander Givens (1753 - 1833) of County Cork and Missouri Territory (my individual 15).

Variant spellings of GIVENS that I have seen include ``Gibbens,'' ``Gibons,'' ``Givan,'' ``Giveans,'' ``Given,'' ``Givens,'' ``Givings,'' ``Givins,'' ``Givvans,'' ``Gwins,'' and ``Jennings'' though some of these are doubtless misspellings or transcription errors.

  Among names suggested for James Givens' other wife are Mary Margaret Sittlington, Jane, and Rebecca Brown.
  Valeria Duffy shows Edward Givvans as son of 2.1.3 and 1.1.1, but this does not conform to other lists. Since James Givens is shown elsewhere as having an earlier wife, we will assume she was the mother of Edward (2.1.11.1).

Sources do not identify (or misidentify) the John Givens who married Rebecca Allen, but many sources, without naming John's father, call him John Givens Jr.. This John had two cousins John (2.1.1 and 2.2.1) who are each sometimes shown as Rebecca Allen's husband, but not only is neither a Jr., but each has attested children by another wife.

  Following children of John Givens (2.2.1) and Rebecca Brown (1.3.1) are shown by some sources (e.g. Allison Ellibee) as children of James Givens (2.1.3) and Rebecca Brown (1.3.1). and by some sources as children of John Givens (??) and Rebecca Allen (1.1.6)
The consensus is that father was named John. It seems almost certain that these are Rebecca Brown's children for three reasons: (a) the middle name (Brown) of her granddaughter 1.1.1.10.3 would otherwise be unexplained. (b) Rebecca Allen (1.1.6) was born 1840 and would have been only twelve years old when her ``son'' Thomas was born. (c) Rebecca Brown was supposedly Robert Allan's niece and lived in Winchester. She might have been thought of as an ``Allen,'' especially if her father were deceased. (I've seen little mention of him.)
  John Givens and Rebecca Givens (nee Brown?) lived first in Virginia, then Rowan Co., No. Carol., then Mecklenburg Co., No. Carol., finally moved to Lincoln Co., Ky. in the 1780's.

Before identifying my ancestor Martha Ann Givens, I started to develop a list of candidates. In addition to several Martha Givens shown above born in Kentucky about the right year, here are unidentified Martha Givens I've encountered with similar birth particulars:

Allen Forsythe Givens (b. 22 Apr 1820 Ohio; d. 17 Apr 1914; m. Mary Smith) had the following children: John W., Rachel Eliza, Mary E., Aurilla F., Victoria, James H., Elizabeth, Allen, one other. His AT:

William Givens' first wife was Susanna Anderson. Siblings of Allen F. Givens include David, John, William (b. 31 July 1811). John . Hannah Bennett (1786-1862); their children include Joseph H. Givens (b. 1817; m. Catherine Dewey; had 12 children).

Other Givens of Augusta Co., Virg. unaccounted include William and daughter Jennet (Jane) who married John Berry in 1790 (he then married Isabella dau of James Best in 1794). John Berry (1764-1816) was son of Thomas Berry (Eire 1718-1798 Washington Co., Virg.) and Esther McClure Ward, his 2nd wife.

There is also Robert Givens (ca 1720-1772), b and d Chester Co., Penn. He married Lucy Hartshorn (d. 1815 NC) dau of Jonathon Hartshorn and Lucy Hempstead. Children are John, William, Hanna (m. John Welch), Samuel, Jonathan, James, Jean (m. Isaac White), Robert, Sarah Mary (m. James White).

There is also Jane Berry, wife of 1.1.1.10.1. She might be my ancestor -- there's a gap in her children just right for a Martha. Refer to My Berry / Wright page for any other data on Berry.
