Note: The ancestry of Raoul de Gouy is a mystery. One clue is that Flodard described him in 923 as `Radulfo privigno Rotgeri' (stepson of Roger de Laon). There is much other evidence linking Raoul to Hucbold and Heilwise (apparently wife of both Roger \& Hucbold). The parentage of Hucbold, in turn, is a similar mystery, again approached with circumstantial evidence
